goldfishThe bright and colorful goldfish was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated and remains a popular favorite as a pet. When well cared for, they can live beyond 10 years, and grow quite big too!

Goldfish are often kept in bowls, but it is advisable to get a 20-gallon tank for one fish, as, in such a small environment, they run the risk of stunting, deoxygenation and ammonia/nitrite poisoning. A large tank is necessary as they produce a large amount of waste and hence need a lot of water. For the same reason, a filter for mechanical and biological filtration is mandatory in goldfish tanks. Since goldfish are coldwater fish, the tank does not need to be heated. However, care should be taken to ensure that the tank temperature does not fall below 10 °C (50 °F). Goldfish tanks should have a layer of substrate on the bottom. Tanks should have a tight-fitting glass lid and a fluorescent light, and rocks and woodwork to provide hiding and resting places for them. In a properly-sized tank, a minimum of a 25% water change weekly is required as it helps remove waste, ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates, as well as provide oxygen and nutrient-enriched water. Since goldfish love to eat plants, providing bunch plants like Cabomba is a good idea.

Goldfish tanks help goldfish attain their potential for growth and keep them healthy. Since they lack a stomach and only have an intestinal tract, they cannot digest an excess of proteins. These wastes can build-up to toxic levels in a relatively short period of time, resulting in their sudden death. This is where tanks score over fish bowls. Moreover, goldfish require a larger water surface area, and not water volume. A tank allows for larger surface area and more oxygen can diffuse and dissolve from the air into the water. A water pump, filter or fountain also keeps the water aerated which makes breathing easier for the goldfish.

If you intend to keep more than one goldfish, a much larger tank will be needed. For 4-5 goldfishes, a 55-gallon tank is a must. Gravel, decorative rocks, ornaments, and artificial plants as well as live plants can be used to decorate the tank. Sharp objects must be avoided as they might cut or injure the fish. Plants also provide the goldfishes some interactivity as well as the possibility of seeking refuge from bright light. Artificial plants are preferable as goldfishes have a tendency of rotting up live plants. Gravel allows colonies of beneficial bacteria to thrive which help in the removal of ammonia and nitrites in the goldfish tank and creates suitable living conditions for the fish.
