How to Keep Fish Alive
Fishes are a bit hard to take care of since they are not as expressive as other animals. They do not bark or wiggle their tails like dogs or meow like cats whenever they need something.
They have their subtle ways of expression and as their care takers, it is difficult to figure out their needs. Perhaps they can say much when they are already floating dead. You do not necessarily have to very keen. You just have to know how to keep your fish alive so that you can enjoy your pet for a long time.
Change the water regularly. Perhaps this is the most essential thing to do to keep your dear fish alive. By doing so, the contaminants and wastes in water, which can be detrimental to the fishes, are removed. You should change the water on a regular basis to make sure that all the water changes sum up to 100%. For example, change 15% of the water two times in a week or change 25% of water once weekly.
Fishes are not like humans who can adopt well to changes in the environment’s temperature. They have less capacity to regulate their body heat. Thus, fluctuations in the warmth of water can be highly stressful for them. They thrive on a recommended temperature. Make sure that all species of fishes that live in your aquarium can survive in the same range of temperature. Find out what temperature suits all your fishes and see to it that the water remains in that range. Take extra care when changing water. Be sure that the water is neither too cold nor too hot.
Avoid using too much chemicals in the water. Using compounds to clean the water is not usually recommended. Remember that most chemicals are very hazardous to fishes because these either directly kill them or destroy the beneficial bacteria in the tank that are keeping them healthy. The only safe chemicals to use are water conditioner for chlorine removal, aquarium salt and charcoal in the filters. In case you have to adjust the water’s pH, better use plants to lower the pH or substrate to increase it.
You definitely won’t have problem if you follow the tips stated above in your established aquarium. Rest assured that all of your pets remain healthy and alive and has a very insignificant chance of contracting a disease. The problem comes the moment you add a new fish that you have bought from a pet store. By doing this, you are increasing the risk of your other pet fishes for diseases that may lead to their death. You probably think that you got the new fish from the best store in town and hence, it is safe. Well, you thought wrong. You have to realize that many fishes come and go in any fish store, increasing their susceptibility to infection. So, if you wish to add a new one, place it first in a separate tank for few weeks. Do some monitoring and make sure that it is free from any disease before introducing it to your established aquarium.
